Dear Grandparents
Our gourgeous grandchildren are towards their long summer
holidays. It’s a real effort for the parents to cope with the kids for so many
days home from school. Some parents don’t have grannies that take care of their
children, so going to work is probably harder in this moment of the year.
“Once upon a time” (in 1980’s) our kids, that are now
parents, when home from school, they were left with grandparents exactly like
now. Even at that time some of my colleagues didn’t have anybody to rely on, so
they had to organize baby-sisters. Living in small towns was much easier. Kids
were able to go around by themselves in the little squares and find friends to
play with. It was also safe for them because the cars didn’t pass in those
places. The parents didn’t worry about their children. In the narrow paths
there was always an old lady sitting outside who could give a glance to the
children and see what they were up to.
Lifestyle has changed by then, so we have to get used to
taking care of our grand-kids in other ways. Luckily the society gives to us a lot of
chances to make their days enjoyable.
In my town, Gallicano, you can find lovely and clean
swimming-pools with good swimming teachers. On the way to the pools there is a
garden and a big green space with a play ground. There is a swing, a
see-saw a slide, a table and benches for a picnic, a little bar and a tennis
court too. A lot of summer camps are organized by professional associations.
During the hot hours of the day you can accompany them to the library which is
a very pleasant and cool place. When you are there you can choose a book with
them, and I’m sure they’ll love the moment you read to them a story.
But if the kids desire to stay by themselves, maybe relaxing watching a
program on the tv, or if they just want to stay home with their building-blocks, drawing or playing
with their favorite toy, I think that it will be also good for them.
With the older children we can share cooking with them, or
maybe teaching the girls crochet or sewing doll dresses, while the boys could
learn to fix up a flat tyre of their bike.
They make us happy. They are a gift that life has given to us. Our
grandchildren are like stars that shine in our house all the day long.
Happy holidays grandparents!!!
P.S. I WROTE THIS LETTER ON MY BLOG OF FB IN 2019.....
your writing is very pleasant. To be mother and grandmother emerges in every your sentence, but probably the better is in your spontaneous attitude to see first the positive side of things always. Reading you, I'm convinced that we love better people and thing when they are with us, not through rhetorical paraphrases of circumstance.
